How does oil vacuum pump work?

How does oil vacuum pump work?

Oil vacuum pumps, often rotary vane pumps, create a vacuum by trapping and compressing gas in chambers formed by rotating vanes within a housingOil is used to lubricate the pump’s moving parts, seal the chambers, and condense vapors, improving the vacuum’s efficiency and depth.

This video explains the working principle of oil lubricated rotary vane vacuum pumps:

۱٫ Rotor and Vanes: A rotor, eccentrically mounted within a housing, rotates and carries vanes that slide in and out.

۲٫ Chamber Formation: As the rotor turns, the vanes create chambers that expand and contract. These chambers trap gas from the system being evacuated.

۳٫ Compression and Exhaust: As the rotor continues to turn, the trapped gas is compressed and forced out of the pump through an exhaust port.

۴٫ Oil’s Role:
  • Lubrication:
The oil lubricates the rotating and sliding parts (vanes, rotor, and housing), reducing friction and wear.

  • Sealing:
A thin film of oil seals the gaps between the vanes and the housing, preventing air from leaking back into the evacuated chamber, which enhances vacuum depth.

  • Vapor Condensation:
Oil can also help condense vapors present in the system, improving the vacuum’s effectiveness.

۵٫ Cycle: The cycle of trapping gas, compressing it, and exhausting it repeats continuously as the rotor turns, creating a continuous vacuum.
