How does a brake booster work?

How does a brake booster work?

A brake booster amplifies the force you apply to the brake pedal, making it easier to stop your vehicle. It does this by using a vacuum created by the engine to multiply the pressure you exert on the brake pedal, which then pushes fluid into the brake calipers or wheel cylinders, applying the brakes.

  1. ۱٫ Engine Vacuum:
The brake booster relies on a vacuum created by the engine’s intake manifold. This vacuum is typically maintained by a one-way valve that keeps a constant vacuum on one side of the booster’s diaphragm.

  2. ۲٫ Brake Pedal Input:
When you press the brake pedal, a rod connected to the pedal pushes a valve inside the booster.

  3. ۳٫ Pressure Differential:
This valve opens, allowing air to flow into the booster on one side of a diaphragm, while the other side remains at a vacuum. This creates a pressure difference across the diaphragm.

  4. ۴٫ Diaphragm Movement:
The higher pressure on one side of the diaphragm pushes it, and this movement is mechanically linked to the master cylinder.

  5. ۵٫ Master Cylinder Activation:
The movement of the diaphragm pushes the master cylinder’s piston, which then forces brake fluid through the brake lines to the calipers or wheel cylinders, applying the brakes.

  6. ۶٫ Power Braking:
The brake booster significantly amplifies the force from your foot, making it much easier to stop the car, especially with disc brakes, which require higher clamping force.
